  The Connecticut Sheep, Wool & Fiber Festival celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2009. The festival started in 1909 by the CT Sheep Breeders Association as a program "to promote the keeping of sheep in Connecticut" by visiting farms and eventually to a one day event held at UCONN. It has evolved and expanded into a premier sheep and fiber festival. This event is family friendly agricultural and learning experience for the general public as well as shepherds and fiber enthusiasts.

  UPDATE: Registration is now closed

  Our annual retreat and workshops will be held from Thursday, May 9 to Sunday, May 12, 2023. Once again, we will be at Mercy by the Sea Conference Center in Madison, CT. The retreat house is located on Long Island Sound and all rooms have a private bathroom and air conditioning. 

  Our teachers for this year will be: 

  • Bobbi Donnelly who will be teaching Tønder Lace.
  • Holly Van Sciver will be offering beginning, intermediate or advanced Torchon, Bedfordshire, Bucks Point, Honiton, Russian, Hungarian, contemporary lace and more. Holly will also be our vendor.
  • Sharon Sacco will be teaching a beginner bobbin lace class for those who are new to lacemaking, or those who have been away from lacemaking for a while and need to go back to basics. This class will be subsidized by NELG.

  Registration is open from January 22 through April 1. Paid registrations received by March 1 will receive up to $20 early bird discount on accommodations and workshop fees. Detailed information is available here.

  Our commemorative bobbin this year is from Chris Parsons. Please note that to guarantee delivery for retreat, the deadline for ordering a commemorative bobbin is March 1. Late orders will be accepted, but these will be delivered after retreat.

  IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

  • Single rooms will be assigned on a first-come first paid basis
  • Check in time is no earlier than 4pm for afternoon arrivals
  • All meals are generally served buffet-style; dietary restrictions can be accommodated
  • Meal times will be confirmed a few days prior to the event
  • Class hours are 9am - noon and 2pm - 5pm on Friday and Saturday, and 9am - noon on Sunday
  • We are welcome to bring wine/beer to enjoy in the evenings, but no bottles or cans in their trash, please. We will need to take them home.
  • Checkout time from guestrooms is 10 am on Sunday morning
  • All guests are invited to remain on the property and enjoy the grounds until 4:30pm, common areas and gift/bookshop before check in and after check out

The Fair runs from Saturday, August 3 through Sunday, August 11 and our preferred date to attend is Friday, August 9 (not yet confirmed). We have been asked to limit attendance to 6 people.

  Those who attended last year shared overnight accommodation at a fabulous log cabin for 2 nights (Thurday and Friday). The cabin is available for our preferred dates, so if you are interested in attending, please register early. The cost for 2 nights accommodation is $160.

Those who are new(er) to lacemaking and need some coaching or advice will be able to sit with a more experienced lace maker for assistance. Please note, this is not intended to be formal teaching, but a way to help less experienced lacemakers.

It's a pretty low-key event featuring demonstrations by craftspeople, activities with other local museums, kids' activities, musicians throughout the day, food trucks, etc.

  It's a fun event in that it brings out a lot of the "usual" museum crowd, but also brings in people from the city and surrounding area who are new.

  The Big E - the largest fair in the Northeast!

  Sign up to demonstrate at the Big E.  It's a great time and fair-goers love to see how lace is made.  Gates open at 8 a.m. and most exhibits and buildings are open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. 

  In return for volunteering for four (4) hours, you will receive an entrance ticket and a parking pass. Deadline for registration is August 14, 2024.
