  Join us for a time to chat, make lace together, and share ideas with fellow lacemakers.  This is not a formal teaching event, nor an NELG business meeting.  It’s an opportunity to see what other people are working on, share time with other lacemakers, and to give and get lacemaking inspiration.  

  This is a chance for everyone to get together during the week, for those who are not available on weekends, those who are not able to drive, are too far away, or just love to get together with others.

  Dual cameras make it most enjoyable - one so we can see the lacemaker, and the other so we all can see your lace!  But this is entirely optional. This generally requires two devices - a cell phone on a stand to show your lace, and a tablet, laptop, or desktop so we can see you.  You will sign into the Zoom on both devices but will mute Zoom on your cell phone.

  Members will receive the Zoom link in the announcement email. Guests are welcome to attend, but will need to email nelginfo@gmail.com to request the Zoom link.

  It's a challenge, but it's possible with large lace installations of your own design & creation. 

  We cannot make the lace for you, but we can share our experience on how we have done it in Girona since 2017 within the flowers festival, Girona Temps de Flors. 

  M MERCÈ ROVIRA: LACE ARTIST

  I made lace at school when I was a child, from 7 to 10 years old, approximately.

  I didn't like it, it was torture, while I was doing lace my brothers played in the woods and fields near our home... At that time, in the afternoon, the women sewed and made crafts, embroidery; boys, instead, were having fun with whatever they wanted. Obviously when I grew up and studied, with the excuse of studying I stopped it completely.

  In 2001, my parents had a car accident, my father died on the road and my mother was very badly injured but she survived him for 10 more years. During this time, we had to socialize her to recover from the physical and psychological wounds of the accident, and we took her to make lace, which she had done as a child too. I liked this experience and I started doing it to compensate for the stress of so many hours and so many work related issues in my head... This is how, at the age of 62, I re-entered the world of lace.

  I have made all kinds of lace since then: geometric, tulle, Flanders, Binche, needlework... and contemporary since I discovered it. It’s my favorite! I find that it allows me to be myself, express my feelings, experiment with new stitches and new materials.

  I promoted the foundation of the Girona Lacemakers Association to improve the quality of lace in our region, because every time we went out to the squares to make lace we saw them all the same, boring, repetitive, copy after copy...

  The years go by and every day I am busier doing lace projects and stimulating innovation in the world of lace than making lace. It is not pleasant, but I think it is good and someone has to do it.

  I am currently president of Girona Lacemakers, of OIDFA Spain, and vice president of OIDFA international.

  This past September we started a new project that we are very excited about: the Girona Contemporary Lace Biennial. We want to highlight creation in lace, the ability of contemporary lace to help express one's feelings and abilities, inspiration, mastery of technique and research on new materials in lacemaking, the occupation of space with lace and the non-space, etc.

• Beginner Bobbin Lace Workshop

  Join Judy and Mary–two local, passionate, and experienced teachers– for an intimate and intensive beginner class series in making bobbin lace. 

  Using a 12-hour curriculum developed by members of the International Organization of Lace you’ll learn the foundational stitches of bobbin lace and the crucial tools and techniques required to get you going on your lacemaking journey.

  • You’ll explore: a stitch sampler, bracelet, bookmark, and other small beginner skills.
  • Includes: bobbins, pins, thread, patterns, curriculum, snacks, and social connection with other creatives embarking on a niche new craft. Loaner bobbin lace pillows available, or bring your own. (We’ll encourage everyone to use the same thread for alignment with the lessons.)
    
  • Class limit: 8 beginning lacemakers

  You’ll also have free access to “office hours” with Mary at The Chest Collective’s drop-in fiber arts social sessions on Monday 10/27 and 11/2, 6:30-9PM. During office hours, you can work on your class pieces or ask other questions about lace/lacemaking and connect with other makers.

  Your instructors

  Judy Jeon-Chapman: Intrigued by the historical importance of bobbin lace in Le Puy-en-Velay, France, while conducting sabbatical research in that city, Judy decided to take bobbin lace lessons at the famous Centre d'Enseignement de la Dentelle aux Fuseaux [Center for Teaching Bobbin Lace] of that city. The predominant style of lace there is Cluny, the type of lace that Judy practices the most, but she has also studied other types of lace such as Bedfordshire, Milanese and Binche.

  Mary Mangan: Drawn to lace as a Revolutionary War reenactor, Mary wanted to complete her wardrobe with period lace trims. She is now an enthusiastic lacemaker of Ipswich lace, the only American lace of that period. In addition, she explores many other lace styles for both historic reproductions and modern artwork lace pieces like Milanese as well.

• IOLI Lace Lecture: "A Collector's Gift: Mary Eno Pinchot and the Art of Lace Preservation""

  Join Karen Thompson and Katelynn Ulmer for an in-depth look into the life of Mary Eno Pinchot (1838-1914), a lace collector active during the late 1890s-early 1900s whose philanthropic influence is often overlooked. During her lifetime, Pinchot donated lace to several museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. She also exhibited her collection at the Chicago World's Fair in 1893.

  But her most influential lace donation was to the Smithsonian's National Museum in 1908 where she chaired the women's committee responsible for starting the museum's extensive collection of lace and other textile arts. Learn more about what inspired Pinchot to collect lace, her role at the Smithsonian, her connection with other lace collectors, and more, in this talk with Thompson and Ulmer.

  This month we will have a guest speaker, Amanda Flynn Rumney of Dirty Blue Shirts, presenting: "Lása an Ghorta Mhóir: Irish Famine Lace and the Rise of Crochet in 19th Century America”

  Explore the history of Irish lace from 18th century bobbin lace to mid-19th century crochet. Through period examples and recreations of collars, reticules, and more, this program follows crochet's journey from a means of survival to high Victorian fashion.

  Amanda Flynn Rumney approaches living history as an archaeologist, teacher, writer, and genealogist. In 2015, she received her MA in Archaeology: Museum & Artefact Studies from Durham University in the UK. She has been an avid crocheter for over 20 years and began exploring the fiber art's Irish heritage in 2016. When not crocheting or cataloging some old thing, she combines her experiences in education, material culture, and document-based research to create unique living history experiences.

  We have been invited by the Betty Allen Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution in Northampton, MA to be part of their year-long celebration: "Hands That Shaped the Nation" to commemorate America's 250th!

  There will be a presentation of the Ipswich lace mobile exhibit, as well as lacemaking demonstrations and the opportunity for visitors to make lace on one of our "hands on" lacemaking pillows.

• NELG Annual Retreat and Workshops

  Our annual retreat and workshops will be held from Thursday, May 28 through Sunday, May 31, 2026. Once again, we will be at Mercy by the Sea Conference Center in Madison, CT. The retreat house is located on Long Island Sound and all rooms have a private bathroom. 

  Our teachers for this year will be: 

  • Kim Davis who will be teaching Early Bobbin Lace

  • Holly Van Sciver will be offering all levels of Torchon, Bedfordshire, Bucks Point,  Honiton, Russian, contemporary lace and more. Holly will also be our vendor.

  • Carolyn Wetzel will be teaching a beginner bobbin lace class for those who are new to lacemaking, or those who have been away from lacemaking for a while and need to go back to basics. This class will be subsidized by NELG.

  Registration will open on February 1 and close on April 26. Paid registrations received by March 15 will receive up to $20 early bird discount on accommodations and workshop fees.

  More detailed information will be available closer to registration opening.

  Our commemorative bobbin this year is from Chris Parsons. Please note that to guarantee delivery for retreat, the deadline for ordering a commemorative bobbin is March 1. Late orders will be accepted, but these will be delivered after retreat.

  IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

  • Single rooms will be assigned on a first-come first paid basis
  • Check in time is no earlier than 4pm for afternoon arrivals
  • All meals are generally served buffet-style; dietary restrictions can be accommodated
  • Class hours are 9am - noon and 2pm - 5pm on Friday and Saturday, and 9am - noon on Sunday
  • We are welcome to bring wine/beer to enjoy in the evenings, but no bottles or cans in their trash, please. We will need to take them home.
  • Checkout time from guestrooms is 10 am on Sunday morning
  • All guests are invited to remain on the property and enjoy the grounds until 4:30pm, common areas and gift/bookshop before check in and after check out

  We have been invited to demonstrate lacemaking at the Gilmanton Historical Society, in Gilmanton, NH at their Flax & Farm event.

  The Gilmanton Historical Society opened a small museum a couple years ago in a historic barn. They are putting together a collection of fiber and farming tools with local provenance.

  If you are interested in attending, please register. Please note that you must use linen thread at this demonstration.

  Please note that there is a rain date of Sunday, July 26 and you will be asked to confirm if you are available on the rain date.
